Stamping, roll forming and controls for furniture manufacturers

Furniture manufacturers often operate a mix of legacy equipment, specialized production processes, repeat part families, and just-in-time manufacturing expectations. These operations need dependable stamping, roll forming, accurate feeding, consistent material handling, practical controls, and reliable line communication so production can keep moving while supporting quick changeovers and customer-driven schedules.

The Industry

Modernization that is practical, documented and serviceable

Because many furniture manufacturers run established product lines on long-standing equipment, modernization projects must be practical, well-documented, serviceable, and aligned with existing plant technology, maintenance expectations, and operator familiarity.

Flexible feeding capability

Multiple feed lengths and complex progressions in one part, on controls that handle them without a custom platform.

Repeatable part quality

Repeat part families that come off the line the same way every run, on equipment that may have been running them for decades.

Quick die changes

Just-in-time schedules met by die changes that take minutes, so a customer-driven order does not wait on a setup.

Quick coil changes

Coil handling that swaps material between part families without stopping the press room for long.

ERP integration

Production lines that communicate with the plant’s ERP and the systems around them, so the schedule and the floor agree.

What VMS does

We understand requirements and expectations

VMS supports furniture and furniture-adjacent manufacturers by helping evaluate, source, and coordinate equipment for stamping, roll forming, press controls, feed lines, coil handling, feeder retrofits, press modernization, automation, controls upgrades, parts, service, and production support. VMS can help customers determine when a full equipment replacement is needed and when retrofits are appropriate for mechanically sound equipment.

VMS brings value by understanding the customer’s production process, existing equipment, controls requirements, part families, feed progression needs, changeover goals, JIT requirements, ERP integration needs, operator expectations, and long-term support needs before recommending a solution.

What that means

Modernized presses

Modernize older presses and improve control compatibility. Mechanically sound equipment brought up to the plant’s controls standard rather than replaced.

Unique feeding

Support unique feeding applications. Multiple feed lengths and complex progressions handled on standard controls.

Line communication

Enable production lines to communicate more effectively. The press room and the plant system reading from the same schedule.

Practical upgrades

Practical upgrades that improve throughput, consistency, serviceability, and reliability without overbuilding the solution.

How our customers win

Who we build for

MillerKnoll

Press control modernization. VMS partnered with Toledo Integrated Systems to support press control upgrades that aligned with MillerKnoll’s Allen-Bradley controls requirements, current operating standards, and modern safety expectations. VMS supported the first two Chicago press control upgrades with detailed site review, photo documentation, wiring diagram and schematic review, quoting, in-person scope review, installation, and startup support. The relationship continued beyond the initial project with additional upgrades.

Knape & Vogt Manufacturing

Furniture hardware and storage solutions manufacturer supported by VMS through multiple COE feed line and retrofit solutions. VMS worked with COE control engineers to support the customer’s unique drawer slide manufacturing process, including complex feed progression requirements with some parts requiring up to 12 different feed progressions in a single part, and helped bridge the customer’s need for multiple feed lengths and die-gagging requirements while still leveraging standard COE controls, avoiding the added cost of a fully custom control platform. VMS also supported COE retrofits on mechanically sound feeders from other manufacturers, helping the customer gain COE control capability without replacing equipment that did not require replacement.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can VMS support furniture manufacturers with stamping and roll forming needs?

Yes. VMS supports furniture and furniture-adjacent manufacturers with stamping presses, roll forming systems, feed lines, coil handling, controls, automation, retrofits, parts, service, and project coordination.

What production challenges does VMS help solve for furniture manufacturers?

VMS can help address throughput, quick changeover, quick die change, quick coil change, feeding accuracy, flexible feed progression, JIT production needs, controls compatibility, line integration, ERP or plant system communication, production reliability, equipment serviceability, and long equipment life.

Can VMS help furniture manufacturers that need controls compatible with their plant standards?

Yes. VMS can coordinate controls solutions that align with customer requirements, including Allen-Bradley compatibility where applicable, and can support the process from site review and documentation through quoting, installation, startup, and follow-up support.

Can VMS help with complex feed requirements for furniture hardware production?

Yes. VMS can support applications that require flexible feeding, multiple feed lengths, complex feed progressions, and die-gagging support. The Knape & Vogt application is a strong example of VMS helping develop a solution for complex drawer slide production requirements.

Does VMS only sell new equipment, or can it retrofit existing furniture manufacturing equipment?

VMS can help with both. When existing equipment is mechanically sound, VMS can support retrofits, controls upgrades, service, repairs, and modernization. When replacement is the better path, VMS can also help source and coordinate new equipment.

What information does VMS need to recommend the right furniture manufacturing solution?

Helpful details include the product being manufactured, current equipment condition, press or feeder model, controls platform, part family requirements, feed length requirements, production speed, die requirements, JIT requirements, ERP or plant integration needs, safety needs, downtime issues, available floor space, and whether startup, installation, training, or service support is needed.
